Ray has been a member of the NRCC community for more than 25 years, first as a student, then as an accountant in the college's business office, and currently as an associate professor of accounting. He strives to encourage and motivate his students, just as many faculty members did when he was a student. Ray takes great pride in the successes of his students, many of whom have either pursued further education and/or are employed in the accounting field. One of his favorite sayings is "Failing to prepare, you prepare to fail," but he promotes a classroom environment where the students will be prepared, not only for their classroom tests but life's challenges as well.
As a high school student, Ray was unsure of his future, as many people of that age are. One of his high school counselors suggested accounting, a choice he has not regretted. Ray earned an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in Accounting from NRCC, and a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Business with an option in Accounting and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from Radford University. He has pursued additional graduate studies at Virginia Tech and the University of South Carolina. Ray is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a Certified Management Accountant (CMA).
Most of Ray's professional experience, outside of education, has been in the health care industry, including Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield in Roanoke, and a health maintenance organization in Raleigh, North Carolina. Occasionally his students will ask him why he is in the education field, given his credentials. Ray's reply is "I love my students, teaching, the New River Valley and NRCC. There are many things more important in life than money." It is a lesson that hopefully most of his students will learn.
Jay joined the NRCC faculty full-time in 2005 after serving several years as an adjunct instructor. He has over 20 years of teaching experiences in both the traditional classroom setting, as well as in online learning platforms. He has developed both undergraduate and graduate courses in accounting and health care finance, and serves as a taxation subject matter expert for Liberty University.
Jay completed his B.S. degree in accounting at Radford University, his M.B.A. (accounting and tax specialization) through Old Dominion University, and his M.S. of Accounting at Liberty University. Currently, he is working toward earning a doctoral degree through Northcentral University.
Jay’s professional experience includes retail, governmental and healthcare accounting responsibilities. The majority of his career was devoted to the healthcare field, where he worked as a controller and CFO in providing direction and oversight for various accounting processes and systems. He has a strong working knowledge of automated accounting systems and accounting practices and strives to bring these experiences into the classroom. He is a licensed Certified Public Accountant, as well as a Certified Fraud Examiner.
Jay is quick to recognize that “there is no greater reward in working with others than to see them attaining their goals in making for a better life for themselves and their families.”
