BORROWING MATERIALS FAQ

If I have an overdue book, are there overdue fines or will I just not be able to check out more books,
register for classes or receive my transcript?

The library does not charge overdue fines for materials that are returned late. However, your account will be blocked
so that you are unable to register for classes, request a transcript or check out additional materials

Is there any way to pay my library fines online?

If you have lost an item and need to pay replacement fees, you may do that through the Business Office.  At this time,
there is not an online option to pay those fees.

If I find a book that I need at the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library, how do I check it out?  Do I have to
have a library card with them?  And, if I check it out do I have to pick it up or does it get sent to the NRCC
library for pick up?
You may obtain a New River Public Library Cooperative borrowing card which is issued to residents of the New River Valley
by public libraries.  This card allows users to check out materials at any public library within Craig, Floyd, Giles, Montgomery
and Pulaski Counties, and the City of Radford.  At this time, there is no inter-library transfer of materials, so you will need to
visit individual libraries to check out materials.  NRCC Library has links to websites for most area public libraries so you may
search their respective catalogs to find out what titles are available prior to visiting.

If a book is checked out when I go to get it, is there a way to notify me when it comes back in?
Yes. You may place a hold on a book through the online catalog. Simply click the Request This Item link for the book that
you need within the catalog. You’ll have the option to enter notification information such as an email or cell phone. When
the book is returned to the library, a staff member will contact you to notify you of its availability.

If I need to check out a book for a research project and it is already checked out, are there multiple copies?
If not, what do I do?
The first step is to find out the due date for the book that you need.  If it is due back within the time-frame that enables you
to use it for your project, you can place a hold on that book within the library catalog.  When the book is returned, a library
staff member will contact you to let you know that it is available.  If the book is due back after the time that you need it, we
will be glad to borrow another copy for you through Interlibrary Loan.

I have heard of the Interlibrary Loan system but don’t really understand it or what it means.
Interlibrary Loan is a service provided by most libraries that involves acquiring books or articles that they don’t have from
other libraries that have them.  For example, if you find the title of an article on Google and the NRCC Library doesn’t have
access to the full-text in any of our databases, we can get a copy for you through Interlibrary Loan.

How many books can be checked out at one time?
You may check out up to 8 print books at any given time. There is no restriction, however, on the number of eBooks that
you can access at any given time.

Does my NRCC account give me access to any other libraries or databases?
As a Virginia resident, you have borrowing privileges at Virginia Tech and Radford University libraries.  You may check out
books and other items that circulate.  You may also visit those libraries in person and use their databases on-site.

You also have access to local public libraries as well as the New River Valley Libraries.  You may obtain a New River Public
Library Cooperative borrowing card which is issued to residents of the New River Valley by public libraries.  This card allows
users to check out materials at any public library within Craig, Floyd, Giles, Montgomery and Pulaski Counties, and the City
of Radford.  The NRCC Library has links to websites for most area public libraries so you may search their respective catalogs
to find out what titles are available.

How can someone go about requesting or suggesting that the library purchase more books within a certain
genre or subject area?

Students my make purchase requests in person, by phone or email.  You may contact Sandy Smith at (540) 674-3600
ext. 4345 or ssmith@nr.edu.

How long can I check out books?
Books may be checked out for 2 weeks and media such as DVDs and CDs may be checked out for 1 week.

Are there books that you can purchase from the library?

The library does not sell books but you may purchase textbooks from the NRCC Bookstore or from online vendors
such as Amazon or Barnes and Noble.
