Students walking around NRCC Campus

Context

Partners for success logo Finding ways to help students be successful academically and to stay in school to complete their goals is an imperative of a college.  Colleges have traditionally provided programs to students to assist them in the understanding of material and in accessing programs that can offer assistance and support.  New River Community College, like all successful colleges, has offered a variety of internal services to students for many years.

The overarching program, “Partners for Success,” provides a broad spectrum of services, ranging from addressing immediate needs of students, such as tutoring and course content assistance, to longer range needs through the building of a mentorship relationship between a volunteer and a student.  Academic Assistance and Student Retention Services are internal programs which have existed for a number of years at the college.

Academic Assistance is the one-stop location for tutoring, available to all NRCC students in all subject areas.  The website can be very helpful to students; they may click on a subject to learn more about the services and how they are provided.  Many of the pages also have links offering online tutorials and/or helpful information about each subject.  To access the services of Academic Assistance, students may walk in and work with an available tutor at any time; however, ongoing tutoring must be scheduled so that a particular tutor may be assigned.  Students may schedule regular tutoring in a particular subject or subjects across a semester.

Retention Services serves as a link between the faculty and student.  Services include working with students who are struggling to stay in school; assisting in accessing NRCC programs/ services:  financial assistance, career services, counseling services, academic support, special needs, and others; and linking students to community resources such as daycare, financial programs, and others.

“Partners for Success,” includes the internal services provided by Academic Assistance and Student Retention Services.  An additional externally staffed program of volunteers will provide partner relationships for Volunteer Services.

Volunteer Services provides support and nurturing for students throughout their educational experiences at New River Community College.   While students are linked to a successful partner who serves as a mentor for the student, the goal will be for students to become confident, self-sustained learners who can regulate their own learning.  Room 170, Godbey Hall, serves as the “connection center” for the students and volunteers.
