Dear Students,

Recently I shared with you that the college would hold a virtual graduation ceremony this spring. Since then, the Governor’s Office released new guidance on graduation ceremonies. I am excited to share that this new guidance will allow NRCC to hold in-person graduation ceremonies. Here is an overview of the plans:

Three ceremonies will be held to honor graduates within their specific program areas, and to ensure all aspects of the guidance are followed.
- Wednesday, May 12, at 6:00 p.m.: Associate Degree Nursing (spring 2020 and spring 2021 graduates), and Practical Nursing (summer 2020 graduates)
- Friday, May 14, at 5:00 p.m.: Division of Arts and Sciences (fall 2019 – summer 2021 graduates)
- Friday, May 14, at 7:30 p.m.: Division of Business and Technologies (fall 2019 – summer 2021 graduates)
Graduates and faculty only will be permitted to attend their designated ceremony. All ceremonies will be livestreamed for family, friends, and others to view off-campus.
Graduates are required to RSVP to attend their designated ceremony, and only those who RSVP will be permitted to participate.
Graduation apparel (gowns, caps, and tassels) are available for purchase on the NRCC Bookstore website.

Don’t delay – all graduates must RSVP no later than Friday, April 30, 2021.

Welcome to the start of the spring semester! Here are a few reminders and some helpful information as you begin classes today.

All 14-week and first 7-week classes begin online today.
**Note: Even though the college’s physical sites (Dublin and Christiansburg) are closed today due to inclement weather, all online and Zoom instruction/classes/labs/meetings/remote learning/etc. will continue as scheduled.

All classes are accessible in Canvas today using the MyAccounts link on the NRCC webpage or http://my.vccs.edu.

Be sure to begin accessing your classes in Canvas today as you will have required work due the first week of classes. Students who do not complete their required assignments will be counted as absent or non-participating and dropped from the class.
Two computer labs (G150 on the Dublin campus and C122 at the Uptown Christiansburg site) are available for your use this semester. Please refer to “Spring Semester Update #6” at the following link for more details: https://www.nr.edu/ciu/spring2021messages.php.

Class Registration Information

Wednesday, February 3: Last day to add first 7-week classes
Friday, February 5: Last day to add 14-week classes without instructor approval
Monday, February 8: Last day to drop first 7-week classes and receive a refund
Monday, February 15: Last day to drop 14-week classes and receive a refund

Bookstore Information

You can purchase your textbooks and supplies online, with home delivery, through the NRCC Bookstore (www.newrivershop.com). Financial aid online purchases are available now through Saturday, February 13. The last day for any returns is Tuesday, February 16. All returns must be received by the Bookstore by this date. Returns must be in the same condition as when purchased and include a copy of the receipt and packing slip, along with student name, email, and telephone number.

Student Services Advisors

All students have an assigned Student Services Advisor who is available to assist you with any questions you may have. Your Student Services Advisor can help connect you to resources designed to support you and help you succeed in your classes. Be on the lookout for an email from your Student Services Advisor this week introducing himself/herself to you and don’t hesitate to reach out to him/her for assistance.

Here is important information for weather-related college closings for the spring 2021 semester.

What does it mean if the college is closed?

When an announcement indicates the college is closed, this means that all in-person, on-campus classes/labs/meetings/etc. are cancelled, including access to open computer labs. The announcement will include details as to whether day classes only are cancelled, evening classes only are cancelled, or both day and evening classes are cancelled

An initial decision often is made to cancel day classes (those classes with start times before 5:00 p.m.). If weather conditions do not improve, a second decision and announcement will be made later in the day to also cancel evening classes. Closing announcement information is included below.

Please note that when the college is closed, online and Zoom instruction/classes/labs/meetings/remote learning/etc. will continue as scheduled.

Where are closing announcements posted?

Closing announcements are posted in the top banner of the college webpage and included as a message on the college’s main phone line (540-674-3600).
Closing information also is sent to your VCCS email and as a text message through the NRCC Alert system. (All students are encouraged to register for the NRCC Alert.) Additionally, closing announcements are shown on WDBJ7 and WSLS10 and included on local radio stations.

As you prepare for the start of spring classes, I want to share information regarding the availability of computer labs and Wi-Fi access on campus.

Computer Labs Available Beginning Monday, February 1

Two computer labs will be available for student use beginning Monday, February 1.

Dublin campus	Godbey Hall, Room 150	Monday-Thursday, 8:00am-10:00pm Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm
Uptown Christiansburg site (formerly known as NRV Mall site)	Room 122	Monday-Thursday, 8:30am-9:00pm

You will be required to check in/out in order to access the computer labs. Instructions for the check in/out procedures are posted on the computer lab doors. Please be prepared to provide your full name, 7-digit student ID number, VCCS email address, and phone number at check in.

Only students will be allowed in the computer labs and masks will be worn at all times. Family, friends, and children will not be permitted.

Wi-Fi Access

The college has Wi-Fi access in parking lots G and H on the Dublin campus and in the parking area closest to our main entrance at the Uptown Christiansburg site. Here is a link to various Wi-Fi access points throughout the New River Valley.

Dear Students,

If you will be using financial aid and/or scholarships to purchase your textbooks from the NRCC Bookstore, please carefully review the following information.

Financial aid textbook purchases begin on Monday, January 18 and end on Saturday, February 13.
All purchases must be made online on the Bookstore’s website (www.newrivershop.com) and your items will be shipped to you. Be sure to make your purchases early so you can receive your items before classes begin on February 1.
The last day for any returns is Tuesday, February 16. All returns must be received by the Bookstore by this date. Returns must be in the same condition as when purchased and include a copy of the receipt and packing slip, along with student name, email, and telephone number.

Below is the NRCC Financial Aid Bookstore policy. The list of eligible electronic items has been expanded to include tablets and laptops to support remote and online learning. Students with enough financial aid may select one of these items for purchase.

NRCC Financial Aid Bookstore Policy

Students may use excess financial aid in the College Bookstore to purchase only required books and supplies for registered courses deemed eligible for financial aid for the term. A course would be deemed ineligible for financial aid if any of the four following circumstances exist:

The course does not apply to the student’s academic program;
The course has already been repeated once after having been successfully completed. Successful completion is defined as any grade other than an F, U, R, or W;
The course is developmental, and the student has already attempted 30 or more developmental credits; and/or
The course is a basic skills class (BSK) that is below the postsecondary level.

Supplies can include: (Students must have funding available)

Required tools sold by the bookstore. Tools required for a course should be stated on the course syllabus.
Supplies up to $100 (notebooks, pencils, book bags, etc.).
Clothing/Uniforms required by your program of study.

Electronic items that can be purchased with available funding include:

One tablet and keyboard or laptop, that has been financial aid approved, and warranty every two (2) years.

Any other electronic item is considered not course related and may not be purchased with financial aid. Other Items not approved for purchase with financial aid include, but are not limited to, apparel, food, cell phones, gift items, and gift/prepaid cards.

During the book purchase period, books and supplies purchased using financial aid cannot be returned to the College Bookstore for cash. Amounts for returned items must be credited back to the aid that paid for the books and supplies on the student’s account.

Dear Students,

I recently shared with you a link to a letter from VCCS Chancellor Dubois regarding the spring 2021 semester, and that letter is available here. Today I want to share some NRCC-specific updates with you.

The academic calendar for the spring 2021 semester has been revised. Classes will begin on Monday, February 1, and spring break has been removed to allow for a later start and to also allow classes to end on Friday, May 7, as previously scheduled. View the revised calendar.
Like the fall semester, classes for spring 2021 will be delivered through online/remote instruction. A limited number of hands-on, performance-based classes/labs/clinicals will meet in-person beginning the week of February 15.
The spring 2021 class schedule is currently being revised to reflect which classes will be fully online, fully online with Zoom meetings, require hands-on, performance-based meetings, etc. I will send an email update with more information when the schedule has been finalized in SIS and posted online later this month.
Spring 2021 class registration begins on Wednesday, November 4.

We are in the process of creating a “Spring 2021 Information and Updates” link on our main webpage for easy access to information. I will let you know when this is available. Please continue to check your VCCS email daily, and as always, do not hesitate to let me know if you have any questions.

When we postponed our May graduation ceremony, we were hopeful that we would be able to hold a ceremony later this year. Regrettably, we are still unable to host an in-person event at this time, but hope everyone understands that necessity. We continue to review possibilities for a May 2021 ceremony, and we will keep you updated as details emerge. Fall 2020 graduates will receive their diplomas in early February.

Bookstore Information

All students are strongly encouraged to purchase your textbooks and supplies online, with home delivery, through the NRCC Bookstore (www.newrivershop.com). Financial aid online purchases are available now through September 9. Online purchases with home delivery should be the first choice for all students.

A limited number of bookstore appointments will be available for in-store purchases and returns until September 10. Appointments are available Monday – Thursday, 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., and may be scheduled by calling the bookstore at (540) 674-3638. Only students with a scheduled appointment will be admitted to the bookstore and a mask must be worn. More information is available on the bookstore website and additional details will be provided to students when an appointment is scheduled.

Student Services Advisors

All students have an assigned Student Services Advisor who is available to assist you with any questions you may have. Your Student Services Advisor can help connect you to resources designed to support you and help you succeed in your classes. As a reminder, Monday, August 10 is the first day you can use your financial aid to purchase textbooks and supplies from the NRCC Bookstore. All students are strongly encouraged to purchase textbooks online and select home delivery. Here is a link to the Bookstore website: www.newrivershop.com. Financial aid textbook purchases end on September 9, and this is also the last day that you can return textbooks for a refund.

Below is the NRCC Financial Aid Bookstore policy. The list of eligible electronic items has been expanded to include tablets and laptops to support remote and online learning. Students with enough financial aid may select one of these items for purchase.

NRCC Financial Aid Bookstore Policy
Students may use excess financial aid in the College Bookstore to purchase only required books and supplies for registered courses deemed eligible for financial aid for the term. A course would be deemed ineligible for financial aid if any of the four following circumstances exist:

The course does not apply to the student’s academic program;
The course has already been repeated once after having been successfully completed. Successful completion is defined as any grade other than an F, U, R, or W;
The course is developmental, and the student has already attempted 30 or more developmental credits; and/or
The course is a basic skills class (BSK) that is below the postsecondary level.

Supplies can include: (Students must have funding available)

Required tools sold by the bookstore. Tools required for a course should be stated on the course syllabus.

Dear Students,

NRCC has released the following information regarding the fall 2020 semester.

Fall semester classes, which will begin August 24, will be offered online with the exception of some career/technical and workforce development programs that require hands-on or clinical experiences.

For the first two weeks of the semester, all instruction will take place online, including the early portions of classes that will later meet in person. Beginning September 8, classes that include face-to-face instruction will begin meeting while following COVID-19 protocols for small groups. All other instruction will continue to be offered remotely.

NRCC’s academic calendar has been adjusted so that students will not need to return after Thanksgiving. This year’s fall break has been eliminated, and the concluding two weeks of the semester, including final exams, will be completed online.

As noted above, most classes will be offered online. Some performance-based classes/labs will have in-person options beginning September 8. We are in the process of adding notes to our class schedules in SIS and online to help you easily identify the format in which classes will be offered. Our goal is to have this process completed within the next few weeks and I’ll notify you once it’s done. After that, you’ll be able to see the format of your classes in the “Class Notes” section of your online schedule in SIS. More information will be forthcoming and please know that our student services team is ready to assist you with any questions you may have.

The letter grade request portal is now open. The portal will close at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, May 8, 2020. Please read all the information below and in the attachments before accessing the portal.

In response to the effects of COVID-19, the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) issued a policy whereby Pass (P+ or P-) and W grades will be the assigned grades for the spring 2020 semester. However, you have the option to request your earned letter grades.

Option 1: Pass (P+ or P-) and W Grades

Grades for the 14-week, 10-week, and second 7-week courses will be recorded as follows and will not affect your GPA:

P+	Pass with a grade of "C" or higher
P-	Pass with a grade of "D"
W	Withdraw

Notes:
*A grade of W will be assigned to courses in which you withdrew and to courses for which you do not achieve a passing grade.

Letter grades will affect your GPA in accordance with the standard grading system.

The letter grade request portal is available at: http://www.nr.edu/gradechoice. To request letter grades, you will be required to log in with your VCCS username and password. As previously noted, the online portal will close at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, May 8, 2020. Please double check your request for accuracy. Once submitted, your letter grade request is final and may not be changed or revoked.

*Note: All letter grade requests must be made through the online portal. Email requests to instructors will not be accepted.

No Action Taken
If you take no action and choose not to request your earned letter grades, you will receive a P+, P-, or W grade for each course.

The Governor is looking for an additional 30,000 medical and non-medical volunteers to provide support for the immediate surge in our hospitals, long-term care facilities and alternate care sites. To help save lives, consider signing up today as a volunteer with the Virginia Medical Reserve Corps (MRC).

The Virginia Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is a force of dedicated volunteers who stand ready to support the community in the event of a public health emergency. Signing up to serve with the Medical Reserve Corps is a great opportunity for health care majors and other students interested in helping their fellow Virginians. Medical experience is recommended but not required. There are many opportunities for everyone.

This is a follow up to the email I sent on March 24 with the subject: Student Update #6 (COVID-19): Final Grading Options and Extension of Withdrawal Date. Please read all the information below and in the attachment as this includes updates on the grading options and instructions for requesting letter grades. A link to this information will also be posted in Canvas and on the college’s website (https://www.nr.edu).

The online portal will open on Monday, April 27 and will close at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, May 8, 2020.

You may only access the online portal once to request your letter grades. Once your submission is made, your request is final and may not be revoked.

If you choose not to request your earned letter grades, you will receive a P+, P-, or W grade for each course.

Note: All letter grade requests must be made through the online portal. Email requests to instructors will not be accepted.

Repeating a Course
If you are repeating a course during the spring 2020 semester, the grade earned for this semester will replace the earlier grade in your GPA calculation. Both course attempts and grades will show on your transcript; however, only the spring 2020 grade will be included in the GPA calculation. For example, if you request a letter grade for the repeated course, only the letter grade earned for spring 2020 will be included in the GPA calculation. If you receive a P+, P-, or W grade for the repeated course, these grades will not affect your GPA; however, the earlier grade will no longer be included in the GPA calculation.

Developmental Courses
Developmental courses with the course prefix of ENF, MCR, and MTT, along with the CHM 5 course, are considered developmental education courses and will be assigned standard developmental course grades of S, U, or W. These grades do not affect your GPA.

NOVA Shared Services Courses
If you are enrolled in a NOVA shared services course, you must follow the grade request instructions provided by Northern Virginia Community College.

High School Dual Enrolled Courses
If you are a student participating in dual enrolled courses through your high school or the Southwest Virginia Governor’s School, you must follow the grade request instructions provided by your high school.

Graduation Requirements
A grade of P+ will count toward graduation in all programs; in many programs, a P- will also count toward graduation. As noted above, a grade of P- will not be accepted as transfer credit at another college or university.

Transcripts
All spring 2020 grades, including P+, P-, W, and letter grades, will appear on your transcript. A notation for the spring 2020 semester will be included to indicate the meaning of the P grades.

Transferring P+ Grades to Another College or University
The State Council for Higher Education in Virginia (SCHEV) is working with the VCCS and four-year colleges and universities on the acceptance and transferability of P+ grades. At this time, most public Virginia colleges and universities have indicated they will accept P+ grades earned during the spring 2020 semester. SCHEV is working to create an online resource with this information and this will be shared with you once it becomes available. Below is information specific to Radford University and Virginia Tech:

Radford University will accept the grade of P+ in transfer credit from the VCCS. Grades of P- will not be accepted.

Virginia Tech will accept the grade of P+ in transfer credit from the VCCS. Grades of P- will not be accepted.

*Note: As always, you should contact your transfer institution with specific questions about special requirements for certain programs and majors.

I encourage you to take your time before making the decision about your grading options. There is no need to rush this decision as you have until Friday, May 8 to submit your letter grade requests. Use these next four weeks to continue focusing on your course work and striving to do your best. I wish you all the best as you finish out the semester.

The Virginia Community College System (VCCS) has established a grading policy for the spring 2020 semester in response to the access and learning challenges resulting from the COVID-19 emergency.

The first 7-week session which has already ended will follow the standard grading scale of awarding letter grades.

The 14-week, 10-week, and second 7-week sessions will use the following grading scale:

Grade	Description	Notes
P+	Pass with a grade of "C" or higher	Applies to college transfer, technical education, and developmental courses. A grade of P+ will not affect a student’s GPA.
P-	Pass with a grade of "D"	Applies to college transfer, technical education, and developmental courses. A grade of P- will not affect a student’s GPA.
W	Withdraw	A student may withdraw up until the last day of instruction without penalty. This date for NRCC is Friday, May 8, 2020.

Students may request their earned letter grades (A, B, C, D, F). Requests must be submitted no later than the last day of class instruction (prior to administering the final exam or project for the course). *This date for NRCC is Friday, May 8, 2020. Students may submit only one grade request per course, and the request is final and may not be revoked.

Students will have the option to identify the courses for which they want to request their earned letter grade. The option will exist for students to request letter grades for some courses and to also receive P+, P-, or W grades for other courses. Students who choose not to request their earned letter grades will automatically receive a P+, P-, or W grade for each of their courses.

Note: The college is developing a secure online process by which students may request their earned letter grades. These requests are not to be submitted to faculty members, advisors, or other college staff members. A separate email will be sent soon with information and instructions for requesting letter grades.

*The extended withdrawal date was previously set as May 14; however, as a result of this new grading policy, the withdrawal date is now Friday, May 8, 2020.

*Students enrolled in NOVA Shared Services courses must follow the dates established by Northern Virginia Community College.

*High school dual enrolled students must follow the grading policy and the dates established by their high school.

Thanks again for your paitence and understanding as these details have been worked out. I’ll continue to send updates, as needed, and will send information and instructions on requesting letter grades through an online process once this has been finalized.

The Virginia Community College System is developing a plan for students to receive grades of Pass/Fail for courses which are still in progress for the spring semester. This is in direct response to equity issues affecting students such as lack of access, transportation, and connectivity.

Specific information is being developed that will clearly define the Pass/Fail grading options and I will share this with you once I receive it.

The last day for NRCC students to withdraw and receive a “W” has been extended until the last day of the semester which is Thursday, May 14, 2020.

If you were considering withdrawing from a course, I want to strongly encourage you to continue this semester. We are all in a state of transition this week as most instruction and support have moved to an online/remote format. As I mentioned in my last email, you CAN do this! NRCC’s faculty and staff are ready and willing to assist you however they can. We WILL get through this semester together. That doesn’t mean there won’t be some frustrating or confusing moments – these probably would have happened anyway. Social Distancing

First and foremost, your health and well-being are of our utmost importance. In accordance with requests from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the President of the United States, and the Governor of Virginia, the college also asks that you practice social distancing. Everyone is responsible for doing his/her part to slow the spread of COVID-19. To that end, it is critical that you avoid gathering in large crowds. Social distancing does not mean it is a holiday, a time to throw a party, or a time to go to the beach with friends. It is not life as normal; however, the sooner we all adhere to social distancing guidelines will hopefully mean a sooner return to our normal routines. Continuity of Instruction

As a reminder, the following is in place beginning today:

Current online classes will continue as planned. Faculty will communicate any changes in assignments, due dates, testing requirements, etc.
Most in-person classes have been moved online via Canvas or to another remote delivery format (emails, videos, Zoom meetings, instructional packets, etc.). Faculty will directly communicate delivery format information to their students.
Some performance-based, face-to-face classes will meet in-person, following current CDC guidelines. Faculty will directly communicate important information about these meetings, including meeting times, to their students. An updated list of these performance-based, face-to-face classes is attached.

Accessing Support Services and Resources

Student success continues to be our number one priority. Though staff will be working remotely, we are committed to providing the same level of support services and resources. Each student has an assigned Student Services Advisor who will be reaching out to you to offer assistance and to ensure you know how to contact them. We have wonderful faculty at NRCC and they are ready and willing to assist you however they can. Please contact them immediately with any questions you may have.

Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Hand sanitizers (greater than 60% alcohol) can be used if you aren't able to wash your hands.

The college has just issued the following news release:

In light of the situation with the coronavirus (COVID-19), New River Community College is extending spring break for students by an additional week. The college is currently on a one-week break, and classes were originally scheduled to resume Monday, March 16.

College offices will remain open next week. Faculty and staff will make preparations during that time for possible additional measures such as shifting all instruction to online, implementing a hybrid approach or taking other actions for which a need may be determined. College officials will continue to monitor the situation in cooperation with public health agencies.
