Walter Laing’s art, “Walter Laing: a Retrospective,” is now on display in the Fletcher Gallery in Godbey Hall at New River Community College in Dublin. A reception/art talk with the artist will be held Thursday, November 1, from 12:30 to 2 p.m.
“I discovered oil painting and found it to be not only the outlet I needed, but a way for my inner voice to whisper or sometimes quietly scream,” says Laing. “I strive to be an artist who conveys emotion and makes the senses sparkle. Every painting is a relationship with all the nuances: love, fear of failure, fights, forgiveness, arguing, satisfaction, sadness, understanding, and feelings of joy and accomplishment.”
Laing grew up in Floyd and received a bachelor’s degree in visual communication from Virginia Commonwealth University. Laing says he continued to paint after college or work, using Masonite that he found at construction sites or buying hard board at a lumber store.
The show will be displayed until Friday, December 14. The gallery hours are Mondays and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesdays from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
