Dr. Peter Anderson

New River Community College has hired Dr. Peter T. Anderson, of Blacksburg, as the new vice president for instruction and student services after a national search process. Anderson recently accepted the position after serving as interim vice president for instruction and student services when the previous vice president, Dr. Pat Huber, became president of the college in July.

Anderson began at NRCC as an adjunct instructor in the electronics, instrumentation and electrical area in 1997. In 2010, he became the coordinator of the Health Information Technology Education (HITE) grant at the college. He was hired as the dean of business and technologies in 2013.

“Peter brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and leadership to this position and will bring new levels of energy and excitement to our work at NRCC,” said Huber, NRCC president.

Prior to his employment at the college, Anderson spent 18 years working with the Pulaski County School System. He served as the career and technical education director, an assistant principal at Pulaski County High School and Dublin Middle School, and as a building trades instructor.

Anderson earned a doctorate from Old Dominion University, a master’s degree from Radford University, a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and an associate degree from New River Community College.

Having grown up in Blacksburg, Anderson currently lives there with his wife, Julie, and three children, Ryan, Brooke and Grace.

Anderson is involved in the New River Valley community in several different capacities. Since 2010, he has been the pastor at Edgemont Christian Church in Christiansburg. He is also a member of the Blacksburg Rotary Club, a board member of the Montgomery County Economic Development Commission and has been a youth sports coach for over 14 years. Anderson served as president of Blacksburg Dixie Softball from 2011 to 2017.

He is an 82nd Airborne Division “Operation Desert Storm” combat veteran.

“This appointment is an honor and blessing to serve such a wonderful group of faculty, staff and students at New River Community College,” Anderson said. “I look forward to the challenges and successes we will experience together.”
