New River Community College has recently named Carol Hurst of Pulaski as dean of arts and sciences. She began her career in education as a high school English teacher and served several schools in southwestern Virginia. She was hired by NRCC in 1988 to teach full-time as a member of the English faculty.
" Education is so important. I feel that this new position is an opportunity for me to support our faculty as they guide students in their educational pursuits," Hurst said.
Duties of the dean of arts and sciences include supervising and evaluating full-time and adjunct faculty, promoting staff development, preparing a master course schedule, enhancing partnerships with public schools including the dual enrollment program for the division, and other administrative responsibilities.
A native of Floyd County, she earned a bachelor's degree in English from Radford University and a master's degree in education from the University of Virginia. Dr. Pat Huber, NRCC's vice president for instruction and student services, says, "Carol Hurst has served with distinction as the interim dean for the past two years. We are fortunate that her commitment to NRCC's teaching and learning mission as well as her leadership skills will continue to complement the college's work."
