Procedures for Registering with the Disability Services Center

The following guidelines were developed to assure that documentation will provide sufficient information to verify eligibility and to support request for accommodation in a timely manner.

Step 1:

Students must meet the admission requirements for New River Community College by completing the appropriate application for admission, providing transcripts from other schools as appropriate, and completion of placement testing. Alternate placement testing formatting and accommodations can be arranged in advance if requested by the student.

All NEW STUDENTS entering NRCC for the first time must register for a New Student Orientation session offered prior to the first day of class at www.nr.edu/newstudent.

Step 2:

Students must self-identify to the CDS Office that he/she has a disability and would like to request assistance/accommodation with classes.

Step 3:

Student must contact cds@nr.edu to schedule a meeting to discuss current policies and procedures and to complete the intake process with CDS staff as this is an interactive process.

Step 4:

Supporting disability documentation and/or disability documentation provided by a third party must be submitted (see guidelines for submitting third party disability documentation). The type of documentation needed varies depending upon the disability. IEP and 504 Plans are helpful but not sufficient documentation. Professional assessment and evaluation must be current (within the past three years) and needs to include specific diagnosis and clinical documentation of accommodation requested. Students must be evaluated at their own expense and provide this documentation to CDS staff for completion of an accommodation review.

Step 5:

An accommodation review of all documentation will be completed within one week of receipt of all documents. The CDS staff will notify the student once the accommodation review has been completed and the Faculty Accommodation Notification Forms (FANL) are available.

  • Registered CDS students must notify the CDS staff at the beginning of each semester they are attending to ensure their Accommodation Letter is sent to their current faculty.
  • The Faculty Accommodation Notification Letter (FANL) will be emailed to current scheduled faculty and copied to the student within the first week of classes. It is the student's responsibility to notify cds@nr.edu if any changes to their schedule occur after the first day of classes.
