Faculty Information

Circulation Procedures

Faculty and staff are not required to show a picture I.D. when checking out library materials. If the Library staff member or workstudy at the desk is unfamiliar with you, they may ask for your name and/or job position. If you are not in our circulation system, you will be asked to complete an application card so that you can be added to our patron database.

Off-Campus Access to Library Databases

Faculty may access library databases from off-campus using any computer with Internet access. In order to access library databases, you will need to log in to using your VCCS (Virginia Community College System) User ID and Password. This is the same user ID and password used to access Canvas and email. You may access databases directly from the library website or with the library database links on the main page of Canvas. Select the database that you wish to search. You will be prompted for a User ID/customer ID and a Password.

Troubleshooting Remote Access Issues

If you experience problems logging into the system, check the following:

  • Make sure that you've keyed in your User ID and Password correctly.
  • The system may be busy or overloaded. With 23 community colleges using the system, you may have hit a peak time, so please try again later.
  • Try a different browser.
  • Call or email the Technology Services Help Desk at (540) 674-3600, ext. 4400 or nr4help@nr.edu.
  • You may also send a request electronically.

For questions regarding databases, please contact the library at (540) 674-3627 or email us at LibraryHelp@nr.edu.

Loan Periods

Item Types Day/Week(s)
Books and Records 2 weeks
Laptops 1 week
Equipment 1 day
Audiovisual Materials 1 week
  • Faculty and staff may request an extension of the loan period for classes or special projects.
  • Faculty and staff may check out an unlimited number of materials.
  • Faculty and staff may renew materials as long as there are no other requests for that material.
  • Equipment such as projectors, screens and video cameras are for faculty/staff checkout only.

Reserving an Item

If a desired item(s) is checked out, faculty and staff may place a reserve on that particular item(s) using the online catalog. Sign in using your VCCS credentials and select “Request” under Request Options. Fill out the short form to place your item(s) on reserve. You can also speak with a library staff member. You will be contacted when your item(s) is available for checkout. Please reserve equipment at least one week in advance so we can ensure that item's availability and operability.

Library Instruction

We will gladly conduct library orientation or specialized library instruction sessions for your classes. Instruction may be conducted in your classroom if equipped with computer workstations. Instruction may be tailored to focus on subject-specific resources and/or course topics and assignments, searching techniques, evaluating Web based information sources or other relevant topics.

If you would like to schedule library orientation or instruction for your class, please contact the library at 674-3627 or LibraryHelp@nr.edu.
