Thank you for your continued patience and understanding as decisions regarding college operations are being made following guidance provided by the Virginia Community College System (VCCS), Virginia Department of Health (VDH), the Governor’s office, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The health and safety of our students, faculty, staff, and broader community are of the utmost importance.
The most current information will be updated on this page. However, if you would like to see past Fall 2020 communications sent to students, we have made those available as well.
New River Community College has announced plans for the coming academic year. Fall semester classes, which will begin August 24, will be offered online with the exception of some career/technical and workforce development programs that require hands-on or clinical experiences.
For the first two weeks of the semester, all instruction will take place online, including the early portions of classes that will later meet in person. Beginning September 8, classes that include face-to-face instruction will begin meeting while following COVID-19 protocols for small groups. All other instruction will continue to be offered remotely.
NRCC’s academic calendar has been adjusted so that students will not need to return after Thanksgiving. This year’s fall break has been eliminated, and the concluding two weeks of the semester, including final exams, will be completed online.
While college offices will remain closed to the public until further notice, staff are available online at nr.edu and by telephone at 540-674-3600 to assist with registration or other matters. Registration is under way now for both the second summer session (beginning June 25) and the fall semester. Fall course class listings will include identifiers so students may readily determine the format in which they are offered.
The academic calendar for Fall 2020 has been changed as described above. Any future changes to the calendar will be announced and communicated to you via your NRCC student email address.

Student services advisors are available to assist you with registering for your fall 2020 classes. Advisors are available by phone, Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., by calling the Advising Center at 540-674-3609. If you are unable to reach someone during these times, please be patient as this means we are on the phone assisting other students. We ask that you leave a message, and someone will return your call the same day. Messages received after 5:00 p.m. or on weekends will be returned the following business day.
Advisors also are available by email at advising@nr.edu. We ask that you please either call and leave a voicemail message or send an email – but not both. Utilizing both forms of contact methods will result in duplicate advising requests and may slow our response time. Emails will be responded to within one-two business days. We thank you for your patience and understanding as we are committed to helping all students during this time.
As a reminder, if you are a returning student, you may register for classes through the Student Information System (SIS) or by contacting your assigned student services advisor for assistance.
